Another blue heron egg has pipped today, so there might be a hatching tonight or tomorrow. Hope you catch it live, as that is always so fun.

I was fortunate to watch the 2nd camera on the herons, and I watched Mom walking through the pond, through the lily pads, stretching her neck (oh my word, what a looong neck!) and then catching a fish (I assume it was a fish). Fascinating. I love their feathers and their colors too. And what a serene setting.

And that stork egg ... the parents seem quite unconcerned about it, which makes me wonder if they know it isn't viable. But, who knows when it was laid? Could have been well after she laid the eggs for the other three darling stork chicks. Unfortunately, I can't read Dutch!

Last year, the Minnesota loons had an egg on their nest for a long time. I had just begun watching that nest, and their darling offspring, when the worries about that egg escalated. One day the Dad stepped on the egg, and it was only yolk. It had not developed. So, they knew.

Nature is amazing!

Glad you're enjoying the heron nest. I am fascinated by the herons and their antics . . . so different from most other birds!
If you've never seen this video taken last year, it's worth the watch. Mom serves up a nice, pretty, live flopping goldfish for the kids to learn how to eat! There is so much excited clack, clack, clacking about it, you can almost hear them asking mom what to do next!
When one brave kid finally did swallow that fish, he sure had to sit up straight and tall to make it go all the way down that long throat . . . hilarious! One brother/sister clacked about it for a long time!

I find it very interesting how the younguns pull on mom's beak, which seems to stimulate her to urp up something to eat. It's looks like a crazy game of tug-of-war or like they're milking a cow!
Looking forward to the comical toddler stage in their development this year.

Thank you for that video! That was really hilarious! I had to watch it without sound, and I imagined a human conversation coming from those chicks. Entertaining. That one just kept going on and on. Like, "One fish! There's 5 of us, and she brings one lousy fish! It's not fair! Where's our fish?! Let's protest!"

Finally, Mom just walks away to let them work it out for themselves! Too cute.

Thunder, lightning and rain at the heron's nest this evening. Still two eggs yet to hatch.
I read that the chicks are born with blue eyes, but that their eyes soon turn to yellow. This video shows that they already have. Towards the end of the video, you get a good close-up of a chick and can see it's eyes clearly.

I havent seen any Osprey eggs/babies yet. Anyone else see them?

It appears the last two eggs in the great blue heron nest might not hatch but dad is sitting on them right now along with the three growing youngsters, keeping them all out of the rain. That can't be too comfortable with three beaks poking him in the tummy!

I just watched the osprey changing of the guard and got a clear look at three eggs. Last year the Dunrovin ospreys sat and sat and sat on their eggs and they never did hatch as far as I know. Maybe dad's shootin' blanks!

Hawks and falcon young are growing and seem to be doing well.

I'm amazed at how many web cams are out there!

Be sure to go full screen for a good view of the alcoa nest. It looks like it's on a dam of some sort and it's pretty windy there.

Yikes! Please no more nest cams!!! I haven't visited the osprey, and I'm starting to run out of time to check nests!

The last heron hatched on Sunday 5/19, so I'm wondering if it is still possible that those two eggs will hatch. We don't know when they were laid, because the parents didn't have a sharpie to number them for us!

There were 3 baby storks, now there are two. I found an English translation of the blogs on the stork site, with an explanation of what happened to the third stork. Very sad. The remaining two chicks haven't been up when I've visited, so I don't know if the stork egg is still in the nest.

Harmony and Peace are getting so big at the Minnesota Bound nest. So far, no loon has nested on the Minnesota Bound loon platform, and Larry on his blog speculated that the female may have lost her mate during this past harsh season. 1,570 loons died due to E-botulism last season.

Well ... I guess I'll go visit the ospreys! Thanks for keeping us updated and for the great links!

What happened to the baby stork, Rose??

I was unsure about giving specifics, in case it might be upsetting to any of our bird lovers. Evidently, the baby stork was ill or weak, not eating. Mama Heron did what she had to do. Sometimes, to me as a human, Nature seems cruel. But to these wild creatures we observe through our computer screens, it is simply their reality. I have to remind myself of that occasionally.
