Ann, I made the same pasta I made last time. I thought I picked up some noodles I had never had, and when I got it home, it was the exact same I made last time. I guess no sleep is catching up with me. I made the coleslaw yesterday, so I'm ready to eat.

When I walked out into the garage this morning ready to start my walk, I discovered that our garage is flooded. Water gushing out of our water heater tank. Somehow it sprayed upwards, and water is dripping from the rafters. Boxes with the flooring for our kitchen, Jon's supplies, etc. etc. all soaked. Same with the washer and dryer.

Jim got the ladder to check the top of the tank. Then attached the hose to the tank to divert the water to the driveway/curb. Doesn't sound like much, but he overdid.

I called our plumber, and someone will be here mid day. We'll probably need a new water heater. Meanwhile, we have no water serving the house.

It's quite hot and humid, and neither Jim nor I have the energy or strength to clean up the mess.

Thankfully, we have a very nice plumbing company, and they understand our situation.

Bummer in the summer ...

Peg, I'll take the cauliflower salad, never had any. But if your are shipping on ice I'll take some of all of it. That menu made me want to move to Iowa.

Because there is a ‘higher being’ and He is a ‘son of a gun’ with a bizarre sense of humor

Because if something breaks down besides ourselves it is frustrating but a relief!

Eye Doctor gave me a topical antibiotic to use for a week. He says these things take quite a time to completely heal, however he was satisfied with how I am doing. Told me to keep on with the warm compresses. Also, recommended something to clean my lids other than the baby shampoo. He thinks I might be able to go out without sunglasses in another week. So that means I can possibly go to dinner.

Oh Rose, so sorry! It always seems that when you least expect it, something goes wrong. Quite often it's a stupid water heater that has to cause a big drama, but we can't be without them! Hope there wasn't too much water damage done.

Thank you all for your support and feeling our "pain."

A very sweet, kind, polite, and able young man named Cory, arrived at 11:00 a.m. The window was 12:30 to 2:30, so they stepped it up for us, knowing our situation. Bless them.

He assessed our tank and said he could patch it up, but it wouldn't likely last much longer. We had already decided that we wanted a new water heater. A couple of years ago, the owner of the company replaced the entire pilot unit for this tank. We need something reliable.

He gave us the price, and we were pleasantly surprised. We expected it to be twice as much.

It took Cory 3 hours to remove and replace, and he cleaned up the area, dried off the platform on which the tank is placed, and used a long twisting tube to connect, because the smaller tubes "constrict the flow." The new tank is energy efficient and much smaller and safer than our old one.

He then checked our kitchen faucet and assured Jim that it isn't going to blow a gasket. He suggested that we order the kind we want to save money, then he'd install it.

He also looked at our toilets. Once again, he suggested that we look at the prices of toilets on line, and add the installation charge to determine how much we might save. I did that this afternoon, and the amount we might save after shipping and taxes is very small. And my time is worth something, so I'd rather let him handle it. If we have toilets delivered, we have to find space for them in the garage until the plumber is scheduled. That is work for me.

A couple of times, I brought Cory cold water and asked him to take a break. It is blazing hot and the humidity is absurd.

While he was here, he learned our family history. He was genuinely concerned for us and understood the challenges we face. He saw Jon, of course, when he went into Jon's bathroom, but he didn't tarry. He waved and said, "Hi!" He praised Jim's progress fighting cancer and said "you're all amazing."

I asked Cory what kind of company would install a stand by generator, and as I expected he said, "An electrician." When I asked if he could refer us to a good company, he gave us the name and number of a local contractor, who, like our plumber and our HVAC companies, are Father-Son owned. (The Father, now retired, of the HVAC company lived down the street from us from 1977-1992. They were so good to me, when I was a single Mom.)

So, out of this mishap came blessings.

Jim told Cory, "I thought there was a bear in the garage when I heard Rose screaming this morning!"
