That's really Elvis there in the video, is it (Jailhouse Rock)? Not one of those many Elvis imitators? I've never seen an Elvis movie. I wasn't so keen on him as an actor or even as a performer to look at. I just listened to the records.

Virginia, I agree that your LPs might be valuable. I recently gave my entire collection to my son and DIL. They snapped them up and I think they probably sold at least some of them. I was astonished that they wanted to load themselves down with such a heavy stack of 33-1/3 albums but they did. And I suddenly had a free cabinet shelf.

I saw no point in hanging onto them when a person can listen to any version of any music online with a Google search, apparently. At least so far I haven't been able to stump Google on this. I keep requesting obscure pieces--and getting them with very little effort. Often they have far better sound than my records would have had because my records were showing signs of wear and tear after so many years.

    SPMS diagnosed 1980. Avonex 2001-2004. Copaxone 2006-2009. Glatopa (glatiramer acetate = Copaxone) 12/20 - 3/19/24.

Flatcap, I don't care about having a turntable or listening to my records again. I would like to get them out of my upstairs. I am trying to clean out, but that is easier said than done because I don't feel like doing it. There are some really good ones up there, but I am content to listen to my CDs when I want music. Getting rid of clothes and shoes is not a problem because I can take them to Salvation Army or somewhere like that, if I ever felt like it. It is things like the records and tons of pictures that bother me.

Also, I prefer to stay in my downstairs and not have to sit upstairs to do all this. This reminds me that I need to go up and dust the bedroom and make sure everything is alright in the bathroom. I have to pull myself up by the railings and I don't like doing that anymore. The cleaning people don't go up there. They just do the downstairs, and then not always a great job.

agate, Yes, that is the man himself from the movie of the same title. According to my calculations, Elvis turned 22 in 1957, which explains his youthful appearance. He, like you said, was never much of an actor. The movies themselves were worse than bad, and Jailhouse Rock is no exception.

While I can't say Elvis was a good performer, either, I think the video clip is pretty cool. It's at once campy and, for the time, hip. The dancers are what make the scene, in my opinion. I never liked the song itself or most of his other hits. The only Elvis songs I am aware of that I like are the seven listed in my post above, and I only have those as MP3s. I have no Elvis CDs.

Virginia, I think I understand about your records and, especially, your photo collection. I wouldn't be surprised if you said they had more sentimental than practical value.

I have no records, so I also depend on my CD collection for music, although much, much less than I used to. I have a decent bookshelf stereo system, but I almost never fire it up. It's really too loud for my apartment. If I need music on the go, I copy it to a thumbdrive to play in the car. But I only rarely do that anymore. I can't listen to music and concentrate when I'm driving around town, and I hardly ever travel the open highway.

What mainly I do is get on my PC and go on YouTube to play music. My computer speakers sound good enough to me these days, and the choices on YouTube are practically limitless. I usually have just one or two songs in mind, but that very often leads me to others based on the recommendations in the sidebar. I can't tell you how many times that has led me to rediscovering music I haven't heard for many years. I get stuck in a bit of a rabbit hole there sometimes, but it's always good fun. I really love music, and just about everything reminds me of a song. I have also discovered a lot of new music there. It's hard to keep up with since I don't know much about or care for it, but I've learned more than just a thing or two and, along with a lot of older ones, I have a large number of newer songs bookmarked. Combined with writing long, windy tomes like this one, that and watching movies on YouTube keeps me pretty busy. Lol

As for walking stairs, I completely understand. For me, it's become a tiring and terrifying adventure, so I avoid stairs as much as possible. Other than a step or two here or there going into or out of a commercial building, I don't recall the last time I climbed up or down a stairway when I had another choice. I had to go downstairs in my apartment building during a false fire alarm awhile ago, but there was no getting around that. Going down stairs is much harder for me than going up because of my poor balance, and I was very lucky I didn't fall. Needless to say, I rode the elevator going back up. The elevator is one of the main reasons I like living here.

        So, back to the music.

Some might say Robert Gordon sounds like an Elvis impersonator but, if you listen to him, he was much more than that. For one thing, he was a better singer. The only thing Elvis had in common with him was they were both baritones.
