Hi, Virginia,

You always have the best food stories. The only one I can come up with is, I made the best chili in the world when I used to cook, but that was more than 30 years ago. If I could do it now, I surely would. They can hardly spell the word "chili" around here.

I liked my own chili too back in the day when I made it. People liked it, especially with cornbread. Bad chili can be really terrible. Think school lunchrooms.

That reminds me of middle school. They held a spaghetti dinner every year, and while my family never attended, I always did. I would always find some way to come up with the money. I'm sure the spaghetti was awful, but I thought it was a delicacy. It's funny looking back on things like that.

Cooking for a large group, it must be hard to get the seasonings right, and the degree of doneness of the ingredients right, and all of that kind of thing, just because there is so much of each ingredient to deal with, and so many people to please. (I've never cooked for any more than about 6-8 and not very much of that.)

I worked food service for many years before taking my first job after college. The biggest party I ever helped serve was approximately 12,500. That was back in '79. I was a cook, and a very good one at that.


ETA: In college, I was the cook around the house. I was also in charge of the grocery shopping. My gf did the dishes. ;)

Cooking for 12,500! That is truly impressive though I realize you had a little help. That was a party? It would be only too easy to start mingling and get lost in that crowd.

I worked for a medium-size tech firm that had their own in-house food services. Instead of catering it, we were enlisted to serve lunch at their anniversary party. It was a family affair, which accounted for the crowd size. The party was held outside on the campus. The main course for the lunch was ribeye steak. IIRC, the kids got hamburgers. I do not remember any of the side dishes or desserts. All I clearly recall are the ribeyes. I was up to my neck in them. I don't even remember cleaning up, but I'm sure it was great fun — not.


ETA: To say I had help is an understatement. I was part of a large team, and all of us worked hard during the party. Those of us in the kitchen were obviously unable to attend. I do not remember if we were compensated for that, but we probably were.

I hope you were at least given a ribeye or two for your own consumption? Or maybe that was the last thing you wanted after dealing with them so much....

When I was working that job, I almost grew tired of food altogether. For a while there, about all I was eating was yogurt. It was the only thing that I could stand. Everything else seemed gross. I wound up weighing only 135 lbs before it was over. I had similar experiences working restaurant jobs, but nothing like that.

Regarding having to miss the party, like I said, I don't recall whether we were compensated. I am pretty sure we did not receive ribeyes, but it's possible. I just can't remember. I do remember we were paid overtime, but that was because the party was on a Saturday, and we had already worked all week.

I'd like to raise another music-related subject.

clouds z mentioned above the Sue Saad concert s/he attended in 1980, saying they were a good band. That made me think of the best concert I ever attended. I mean best in terms of having fun and the irresistible urge to get up and dance, which nearly everyone did. It was fantastic. Never before or since was I lucky enough to see and participate in something like that.

The year was 1979, and the band was the Ramones, who played punk rock. Their songs are typically around two minutes long. They usually run at a pretty brisk pace, although some are a bit slower. At the concert, all the band did was play, play, play. Nothing but a fast "1, 2, 3, 4" between songs. No sets, just one long session. How they did that without breaks was, and still is, beyond me. I guess that for them it was much like it was for most of us in the audience. I know I didn't take any breaks. I was having too much fun dancing.

I was wondering about the best or favorite concerts others have attended. If it was classical music or something else that isn't very danceable, that's okay, but I mostly mean fun music, not cerebral. I can understand if it was, though. Dancing, or even just wanting to, isn't for everyone.

So, please do tell us all about your memory of the best concert you ever attended. I think it might be a fun, perhaps sentimental, discussion.

*This is one of their slower songs (2:44). I chose it because the video shows the band lip-syncing the song in the movie, Rock 'n' Roll High School (1979). It is also one of my favorites of theirs. A copy of it resides in my MP3 collection.
