Cherie, congrats on tapering from 6mg down to 1mg of ativan! That is quite the accomplishment.

I only started at 1mg and have had a heck of a time weaning off after over a decade on it. I'm down to the diazepam equivalent of .125mg of ativan/day now and will be done shortly.

Are you using anything to sleep now? I'm still having trouble with sleep, I think as a result of ativan withdrawal.

ANY potato can be baked. And yes, russets are very good baking potatoes. I usually only use russets, but like red-skinned potatoes when they are new, in the early summer. Sweet potatoes can be baked too -- without marshmallows. Simply scrub the outside, cut out any eyes (or bad spots...they seem to spoil easily), put them in a baking dish and bake. Served with salt/pepper/butter, they don't need marshmallows. They are SWEET....which is why they are called sweet potatoes.

Maybe they meant snagging a wife young enough to be his daughter!

I saw him, and Sandra Bullock in a movie over the weekend, and I have to say it's the worst movie I've ever seen.

Howie I saw them this weekend too. They were stealing potatoes from my spud cellar!

Ok kids here is the 411 on potatoes from the spud state, Russets are usually the one you see in advertisements and the big ones are the best bakers (that is what they are referred to: bakers) they store well and they have a relatively thick skin. Red are best fresh and they don't store well at all. My all time favorite are Yukon Gold's slightly sweet and have a yellow cast to them. They store ok not great but ok. There is a problem with those huge bakers you see. They don't fit in the standard potato digger. They either get jammed or get bruised to the point they are not marketable. So either dig them by had or have specially modified diggers. I have always wondered why you could not use a beet digger instead (sugar beet not the red ones!!). I am not too familiar with sweet potatoes or Yams I have never seen them grown.

Quite often you will see the field guys loading bags along the sides of the field. The reason is 2 fold you do this to open the field and you plant your specialty spuds that cant be machine handled in the first 4 rows or how ever many rows your digger can do at once.

Now you know everything I know. Plus what you know makes you way smarter than I am.

Howie - I didn't like the movie, Gravity either, couldn't understand why people raved about it. I actually don't think George is a very good actor at all. Waaay better actors/actresses out there that are way more deserving of a lifetime achievement award. Clearly, his British wife probably doesn't watch American movies.

Gary, thanks for the Spudology101 class!

I really appreciate knowing more about russets! They don't look as if they have much of a skin but apparently they bake up well and do have a skin. I'm looking forward to trying a different type of baked potato now.

I've had really good luck with Yukon Golds though I never baked with them. I believe they were the ones I used for potato salad.

Cat, I agree that marshmallows are a total desecration of a perfectly delicious sweet potato, and I've never had a sweet potato I didn't like. I understand that true yams aren't available in the US but in some countries they're like currency. You're wealthy according to how many yams you have.

What they call yams in the US are really something else. Whatever they are, I'll eat them.

I used to do sweet potatoes with brown sugar and melted butter on top for an interesting crust but since they really don't need the added sugar (and neither do I), bread crumbs with the melted butter will do the crust too.

George Clooney? I believe I saw him in a movie once or twice? Is he the sort of guy some people consider good-looking?

This is the guy, I think. Five-o'clock-shadow seems to be the fashion, no?

Afraid the only Clooney I can think of is Rosemary Clooney, and most people may not have heard of her. She did a truly great song called "Come on-a My House" way back in olden days.
