Keep on Moving Club: August 2017

MS creates some real challenges to keep on moving. It helps to inspire each other on how to find ways to move.

Did you stretch in your bed, swing your arms, roll side to side today? Or perhaps you did housework? Or exercised in a pool? Pushed the wheelchair wheels with your arms at the store? Post them here and we can egg each other on.

Here is a re post of agates last night one, in case you missed it:

This may be somewhat off topic but I saw this on the TV news (PBS) and wondered if others saw it--about Muslim girls in Bangladesh who are surfing in spite of considerable criticism from the male Muslim community:

And, Insee that Howie greased it in with a midnight reply to Agate:

"In a Muslim country, they are really putting themselves at risk. Come to America, and BBS will show them all they need to know! "

For the record, that was the one time I was watching TV news because DH called me over for the surfing segment. Those girls are courageous and full of stoke. It's the start of the end for those medieval men who see women as on earth to serve a man. You can see by the expressions on those girls face and the swagger in their step, why I still surf, no matter how much skill MS has robbed me of!

The girls who surf will end up as women on the forefront to initiate change and free their nation from female enslavement.

You have to admire those girls! With the men in their lives saying things like "Women have to be treated respectfully--they should not be out in the open--they should be hidden," you wonder what century these guys are in.

I don't get the equation of "being treated respectfully" with "being hidden" unless they mean that they respect women so much that they believe in sheltering us from the big bad world?

They're afraid of their own sexual impulses. Why aren't the men all covered up too? You know, so women won't be distracted by their own hormones.

It's not really about reverence for women at all. It's all about control and enslavement for the power men then feel.
Did you read Ayan Hirsi's book, Infidel ? She lays it all out, the treatment of women by fundamentalist Muslims. Great book if you haven't read it.

Same could be said to a lesser degree re some fundamentalist Christians

I swam 1/2 mile today . 32 minutes. Resting legs now. Twitchy.

Doc called. Endoscopy this coming Wednesday.

Hair cut and color tomorrow, so zero exercise in order to drive and then sit two hours.

Today I vacuumed the house in preparation for carpet cleaners tomorrow. Well, actually I looked at the clock and it is tomorrow now. Then I stood on my tired legs and ironed two pair of slacks that have to be washed and laid flat to dry, 4 blouses which I spray starched. That took quite awhile (but no exercising because I was standing in same place). Then I cooked dinner and vacuumed some more in some spots because they want it done real good. I also moved some small furniture.

I am going to bed!!!! See you all tomorrow.

Tied up plants on porch for ten minutes in heat: big mistake.

Surfing tomorrow,...I think I was posting in July thread by mistake...

Tying up plants in the heat would be exactly the kind of thing I'd find very hard to do. There's something about activities involving repeated reaching, even if the reach isn't especially high.

Interesting Agate because trying to reach a lot bothers me too.

BBS, you did real good on the swimming time. It amazes me to think about it.

My day was going to Whole Foods, then to bank, then to drug store and then to Lowe's Foods. So that was my walking for the day. Since I, of course, walked in Whole Foods, the drug store and Lowe's Foods that was enough for me for one day. Not as much as I would like to do, but enough for my legs and overall body strength.

That's a lot of walking Virginia! Yours and agates walking amaze ME! No way I could do that! So weird that there is such a wide variety of symptoms.

I have had bad MS in legs and feet since swimming and only ten minutes tying up the plants, albeit in Florida heat. I just had to be a big shot....hoping that's what it was, and not the start of a new flare...

Tomorrow is surfing! Yipeeeeee! I better be able to go for crying out loud.

DH Took me surfing this morning. The waves were perfect for me. They were knee to thigh high and clean conditions because there was no wind. You could see through the waves and you could see the bottom of the ocean. Although it was hot outside because it was so sunny, The ocean had gotten a bit colder, about 79°. So it was perfect!

I scored six fun waves and I was able to surf for 35 minutes. On 2 of the waves, I was hypnotized by my legs, ankles and feet. I was watching them while I was dropping down the face of the wave and absorbing the energy coming back up through the board , watching my legs control its direction, speed, and ability to float down and not fall off. I was amazed that my ankles and feet were able to manage the small drop and acceleration! One could say I was transfixed. I was so mesmerized that I forgot to pay attention to turning the board to the left in order to glide across the face of the wave. I rescued it just in time!

After about eight minutes, I could feel all of my muscles tightening in my legs, ankles and feet. This does not feel good, but more importantly, it is sometimes the signal that I am in danger of having spasms. So I decided to take the next wave in. I popped up and got a momentary foot spasm which threw me off the board. So, I got out.

My husband was getting ready to wheel me back across the beach when he said, "are you sure you want to leave?"

I was thinking about how disappointing it would be to leave after only eight minutes of surfing. So, I sat in the wheelchair and watched the water for a few minutes. I screwed up my courage and went back out there. I am so glad that I did. I got a few more waves easily. If felt so good to paddle out again against waves that had some push to them. The spray coming at me, sometimes pushing me back ---so glorious. And I just love being out there, spotting what looks like a good wave coming, moving into position and paddling hard to catch the wave. Then the amazing feeling of being lifted and accelerated down the face of the week makes it all worthwhile.

So I did that for a half hour and then it clearly was a good idea to get going while I could still walk and not get crumpled up in spasm pain.

All in all, it was super fun and successful. And bittersweet to see how much I've lost of course. But all of us here are constantly up against trying to seek out some fun while experiencing the bitter sweetness of seeing all we have lost.

Ann, she saw Sam surfing, and thought "If a cat can do it, so can I". And the rest, is history.
