Virginia, your last sentence cracked me up. Cats and dogs fighting like cats and dogs over their TV programs...

Too bad about your toilet! Toilet replacements are a huge bother particularly if you don't have a spare one on the premises that you can use while they're spending all day working on it.

BBS, I hope the infusion is an easy one and that you feel better after it. I hope it helps to bring you out of this flare you have been in.

Well, my new toilet is going to be put in tomorrow. Cost is $835.81 - a little more than I had anticipated. Agate, I do have another one for which I am grateful.

$835!!!! Get another quote on that!!! You can buy a toilet for around $200, and it isn't that big a deal to put it in! Turn off the water, drain the old toilet. Break the seal around the base of the old one, haul it out of there, scrape away the gunk (sealing material) from the old one, put on fresh sealant, stick the new toilet in place, let it dry. Turn water back on, and flush. I can't imagine that they can charge $835 for that!!!!

Maybe $835 is the big city price. That is high but I've never had it done.

That's true. That price sounds insanely high. Would they try to rip you off?

We paid $300 which included new toilet and labor. Keep looking!

We've had it done both in a "big city" and in rural America. More than $500 is insanely high.

It's been a few years since my major toilet problem but at the time (about 10 years ago) I found out that the newer "low flow" toilets just don't do a very good job unless you get a pricier one. Maybe they've improved since then.

BBS ~ You'll be in my thoughts tomorrow, and I'll be sending healing energy your way.

Virginia ~ Google toilets, and you'll see the different styles and prices. Ask the plumber what kind of toilet he is installing, then look it up on the internet for its price. Unless you're getting a Trump Tower Penthouse Gold Throne, I'm thinking that the majority of the cost is labor.

Ask for a Senior discount, and see whether he will give you a discount for having a disabling condition. ADA compliance and all of that.

I live in California, so that amount would probably be a bargain here. We had a simple faucet replaced in our bathroom sink: $400. A year later, the owner came out to replace the coil in our water heater, and he charged $300. For the part. No service/labor charge. He knows all about our family, and he didn't rip us off.

Unless you're in a rush to get this job done, it might be worthwhile to get estimates from other plumbers. Choose the toilet you want, call a few plumbers, ask their price to install it.

I hope they are not ripping me off, but I had wondered. However, it also does include hauling the old one away which is very important to me. Our recycling or any sanitary department does not do anything like this.

As far as what you were describing Cat about doing the labor, it is about what I figured, but I can't do it and I need to know that it is properly done. It will be warranted. By the way, I forgot to mention this did include putting in a new flapper in another toilet.

Yea I think it is real high, but I am just not able to look and look for someone else and then maybe get a halfway job. A woman on her own is highly likely to get taken. I don't know what the answer to that is. I bet if I had had a husband just standing there and not saying a word the price would have been at least $200.00 less. Such is life.

Edited to add: I expect it would have cost me $100.00 to get the old one hauled to the dump. Not to mention the fact that I don't know anyone to get to do it.

I would play weepy old crippled lady, crying that I am a widow, this is costing me way so much I'll have to do without for the next month to pay for this, couldn't he give me a discount...

Every new toilet I've had insurance -- most to get high rise ones installed -- the plumber simply took the old one with him....

                              Mine included the haul away.

That is SO true, but is all too common. Things like that are just something a woman has never handled, and has no idea what it's really worth.

And Rose, I had to replace the heating element in my water heater. Went to Lowe's and paid $12 for a new one. Put it in, in about 5 minutes, done.

Always shop around for the part, and labor, and time to get the job done, then decide if it's a fair price. If not, try someone else, and get the lowest price.
