I remember when my dad was first in the NH. He would try and follow me out to the car. So I could bring him home. He was put into an alarm area of the NH and the bells would go off and the nurses would come running.

You are doing the best that you can do. It's better that you are able to pop into someones room until Hank settles down and quits looking for you. It would be much worst if he followed you out to the car.

In order for my dad to get help with the nursing home my mom had to divide the assets except the house. We than spended some of it to buy things like a new car for my mom and new furnance for the house. This caused his share to be less. Then when his share was gone the state paid for the NH bills. We had to set up an account for his share because then the state would know when his share was gone.

My mom got to keep his retirement check every month.

    I love your saying too.
    Take care,
    Dawn

The state didn't say anything about our savings, but we had been saving for a washer & dryer. At the end of May I bought a set and took the money out of the savings to pay for it. We were putting X many dollars into saving each month, then every 6 months we paid the truck insurance and if we were going to WI we'd take out our traveling cash. We don't have much, just a little cushion. OOOOH, I have to lay down, I just stated hurting. Nothing serious

I did not have to set up any kind of trust fund.

I was able to keep my husband’s SS and small pension.

I was told that I could transfer the title of our home to my name only.

I also was told to close out the joint savings account. I had to keep the joint checking account

This is just the experience I had in the state we reside.

The only assistance I received from the NH social worker at that time was the phone Number to call.

In Texas Hank has to be under certain income to receive help. I have to put the overage into a trust fund, then it is not counted as income. I have gotten the paper work done today. When he passes then the state gets the trust fund. I also had to have Hank sign a paper giving me the power to talk the the SS on his behalf. I will continue to get his income minus what has to go into the trust fund.

The NH assistant Administrator has be very helpful. He gave me the trust paper work and the bank said I had to get a lawyer to fill them out. I told him that and he made a phone call asking the person he called if I needed a lawyer and he was told no, then he helped fill them out.

Texas is an income cap state. I live in Wis. a spend-Down state. So that is the reason for the difference of what is done in your state and what was done in mine. It is the reason you had to set up this trust fund for your husband to qualify for Medicaid.
I agree with you in calling it a bunch of Bull. I could add a few other choice words.

This site contains a chart of the states and what approach each takes in regard to whether it is an income cap state or a spend down state

            Medicaid Income Limits
States use one of two approaches to determine if an individual meets their Medicaid income limits. There are income cap states which are said to have "categorically needy Medicaid" and non-income cap states which have "medically needy" or "spend-down" Medicaid. Income cap states set a fixed income limit at 3 times the SSI payment amount. For 2012, this limit is $2,094 a month. Non-income cap states consider an applicant’s income and their cost of care. If it is determined that the applicant cannot afford their cost of care, then he or she will likely qualify. It should be noted that often the family and the state disagree over whether the family can afford the cost of care.

Hey, Jan, sorry to hear you are getting the redtape runaround... we were lucky my grandma had money to cover her nursing home stay, even if ti was tens she had saved in coffee cans she stashed under the old barn in the old fruit cellar!

I am sorry Hank is in Nh, but it is safer for him and you both, IMHO. There just is that point....and it is so hard, so hurtful. Sending hugs,
              Leo

lol @ Jan. Even your dreams can give you some laughs! Now, was it YOUR HOOF or was it the horses HOOF? LOL

I tell you Jan, the patient can think of all the escape doors. They also seem to be able to remember where they are! I was at the NH so much I was running out of ways to "escape" myself!

Its so sad, but the time comes when you have no other choice. I hope all goes well with the Medicaid stuff. They gave Ken and me more gray hairs!

You take care of Jan, you hear? I'm the old great granny of this group, well maybe a contest with a few, but I claim the crown. I get to tell everybody what to do, but alas, nobody listen's, just like the kids.

Please take care and it is always good to hear from you.

                  love ya, Julia

I have a trust account in place and will fill out more paperwork next week after the assistant administrator gets back from vacation. Mayhaps this will do it!

Smooth isn't anything I can relate to. I go to a surgeon on Sept 7 to be scheduled for hernia surgery. Because I'm doing CCPD they have to switch me over to hemo until I heal and the doctor will have me stay in an extended care facility for a month. The nurses have already asked if I am going to bring my computer. What do you think I told them? A friend will take care of Dusty, I hope he doesn't pick up any bad habits there. I have told Hank, but he won't remember.
