Keep on Moving Club: Sept. 2017

MS creates some real challenges to keep on moving. It helps to inspire each other on how to find ways to move.

Did you stretch in your bed, swing your arms, roll side to side today? Or perhaps you did housework? Or exercised in a pool? Pushed the wheelchair wheels with your arms at the store? Post them here and we can support and egg each other on.

Agate did some heart racing exercise last night,. Reads like an adventure mystery story.

I did packing up the rented condo, cleaning out the fridge, sitting in a car for 2 hours. Then a stop for breakfast at Marshlands in Sandwich, Ma.

That was followed by grocery shopping for home in a huge grocer, Market Basket. Then wedging that in the car and then another 2 hours to get home.

Peter empties the car. I put away groceries and empty the cooler. Lots of "bend and stretch" and "standing on tippy-toes."

I'd like to rest today but I have laundry to do.

Ordinary people probably don't think much about the amount of bending and stretching they do on a typical day.

There's one nice thing about the task of putting groceries away, at least as I see it. Once you've stashed away the frozen things and the things that have to be kept cool, you can leave the rest of it in all of untidy piles just sitting there until you get around to it.

They can sit around, and so can you.

I agree, Agate. I don't do as well looking at the laundry pile. It looks back and says, "Ah, come on, how tired can you be?"

I did the bank and store run, and mailed off my paid bills. I just finished making my pasta and fresh coleslaw. I pull two chairs out, one in front of the fridge, the other in front of the stove. I now have the counters clean, and will let both my dishes sit for awhile, then later, will chow down! I'm hungry!!!

The two chairs idea is nifty, Howie. You don't have to keep moving chairs around!

I often have to move chairs (and other furniture) around just to make room for the wheelchair I'm often using, in other places. So the wheelchair that is supposed to help with a disability actually tires me out because of the effort involved in moving furniture to make way for it--and of course there are the doors that don't automatically open, the curbcuts that aren't there and I have to make a detour, etc.

That Americans with Disabilities Act has a lot of loopholes in it, evidently.

There hasn't been even 70% compliance so far as I can figure out.

ANN, I agree about the laundry pile. What it says to me is, "And just what are you going to wear if you let this go undone?"

We can't all go around wearing just a thong.

I overslept and my caregiver went home, an hour later I wake up and notice that it's after 10 am, check my phone that I had left in the living room and noticed a missed call plus a voice mail. So I went into the kitchen so I could start a batch of steel cut oatmeal in my Instant Pot.

I'm glad it's so easy to make and I even have the recipe memorized. Today I used chocolate almond milk instead of the plain almond milk. It was delicious, though I forgot to add the dried blueberries. I'll just have blueberry Greek yogurt for my afternoon snack.

Jendie, does that mean your caregiver gave you no care?

And why aren't toilets in handicap stalls required to be higher? Even docs are way too low. I end up having to stand over and pee like a guy. Can't squat

I usually end up in a regular stall because the seat in the handicap is too tall for me. My legs dangle if I can manage to get up on the seat. Two sides to every coin and all that...

Vicky, regulations might be different in different parts of the country but I've never noticed that the toilets in the handicapped stalls were especially high. The grab bars are what I depend on.

Vicky, you must be a short person.

All you guys have been smart today, even Howie got a lot done.

I went out to the UPS store to mail some things, went through the drive thru at bank, got my nails done, went to Whole Foods, then to Lowe's Foods and then to Panera to get something for supper. I just find I am not as smart as Howie. On the days I do grocery shopping I usually get something out and bring it in. I leave the cooking for the next day.

Hope Agate's day and evening are less exciting than the one she recently had in her building. Agate, you are such a responsible person that you are probably the only one they really feel comfortable turning things over to.

Thank you, Virginia! The repair guy actually arrived and I hope fixed the system but time will tell. At least I no longer need to wait for him. I was sure he wouldn't be around on the weekend or Monday but was glad he turned up this morning.

Vicky is short, you say? Doesn't she spend part of her time as a frog, though? Frogs are what I'd call short.
