An example. Lifting the weight with one arm, straight to the side. It would seem to work the muscles only on that shoulder and arm. But the muscles in your torso opposite that arm have to tighten to counter the added weight on that one side, or you would be tipped to that side.

Sits in the middle of the chair with your feet flat on the floor. Hold a dumbbell in your right hand, letting your arm hang at your side. Make a fist with your left hand and bring it across your chest to your right side. Rest the back of your right arm on the first for support your right arm should be slightly in front of your body, with your right palm facing the side of your knee.
The move:
Slowly bend your elbow and turn your right forearm so the weight move smoothly from your side towards the front of your shoulder. You're right palm should be facing your shoulder at the end, but won't actually touch it.
Count to three as you slowly raise the weight up. Now slowly lower your arm to the starting position with a slow count to three. Repeat 7 more times with the same arm and then do your other arm.
Then go back to your first arm and do seven more exercises with that one to be followed by seven more exercises with your other arm.
If this is overwhelming, just do a handful and see how it goes. I wish I could put a picture of the exercise because it might make it clear what the words are to tell you.Last edited by Sunshine; 09-26-2017, 11:09 AM.

Yes, and thanks, BBS! This is one of the other exercises I did routinely with the 3-lb. weight for quite a while. It's difficult but easier than the one I described. I'm now inspired to return to doing those!Originally posted by BBS1951 View Post

It might not be today because I may have used up a lot of my energy. It would probably be better to wait for a day when I'm more rested. Tomorrow will be such a day, I hope!
Yesterday they were cleaning the gutters and washing the windows for this building. I moved only one plant this time and left the rest of them on the patio, figuring that if they got ruined by the ladders, it's almost the end of the growing season, and maybe they could still be revived anyway.
I left them there, and, for a wonder, the window cleaning guys moved them for me even though I'd asked them if they wanted me to move them, and they'd said No.
Of course I had to move them back, and then since the windows outside were all clean, I felt I had to get the insides clean.
This led to the thought that the curtain for my patio door hasn't been washed in 8 years, not since I bought it. At that time I washed it but it has looked pathetically wrinkly ever since even though I ironed it.
This time I washed it and added starch to the ironing job. For the first time ever that curtain now looks limp.
Then it was such a nice day that I went for a stroll outside at noon instead of waiting for evening.
And of course I had to pour a bucket of water on the patio because of all of the pine needles that had fallen.
I have a feeling Virginia is someone who will understand this type of thinking, and maybe everyone else will as well. You get a nice day and a bit of time when you don't have to do a lot of things, and you think of all kinds of things that need doing.
Then you're tired.

You did a ton of activity! Impressive!
Today I swam 20 minutes, 533 yards. This afternoon I drove 20 minutes to the cabinet shop to start designing accessible kitchen. I only lasted 30 minutes and had to leave. Foot threatened to spasm and I had to be sure I could drive home.
I got a flu shot Monday. Sure hope it doesn't start a cascade of symptoms...

OK, BBS, your exercises are a piece of cake by comparison with ones I've been doing. All of the ones I've tried have involved two 3-lb. weights, one in each hand.
Yours uses only one weight at a time. HUGE difference! Thanks for posting this.SPMS diagnosed 1980. Avonex 2001-2004. Copaxone 2006-2009. Glatopa (glatiramer acetate = Copaxone) 12/20 - 3/19/24.
