Watching the news on Irma right now. If anyone here is still in the path, and you can still evacuate do so NOW! IMMEDIATELY! Time is running out. Do NOT make the mistake I did in not evacuating years ago. Hurricanes are awful and this one is a monster.

Lake O has been a government and sugar industry nightmare for a long time. The politicians are bought and paid for by the sugar barons. This is only the tip of an iceberg as to how they have insidiously destroyed Florida. They will blame Irma. That is a big lie. It's their corrupt policies that cause this Lake problem.

I dunno...looks from here like it will still be a major storm in Atlanta. The Governor is now saying if you're anywhere in the evacuation area and haven't left ... GO TO A SHELTER. It is NOT SAFE to stay at home. The storm is wider than the entire state of Florida, and will cause damage across the entire state. 12 foot water surges are expected. 12 feet of water in a flat state is deadly. Not good. Not at all good.
Call ahead about your infusion...they might not be able to do it, having to deal with other issues....I am not a doctor nor medical professional, and don't pretend to be one, here... :o

:) The category is now 4, so a slight decrease in the wind. I woke about noon to find the whole house flooded. The hot water heater went. Andy came and started mopping. I called a neighbor and he had a heavy duty shop vacuum and came and vacuumed the whole house. Andy went over it all with a clean mop. Then Jim came and cut the pipe and put a metal hose thing on it with a cut off lever. So no more water can enter it.
Now I only have cold water but power is still on. All my shutters are on now. My area is not an evacuation zone. I am as ready as I can get. I filled containers with water and put them in the freezer which will help keep it cold longer if the power goes out. We will probably have sustained winds of 80 to 90 mph. Some gusts may be higher. I think my house can handle those. I will check in when I can. I trust the Lord to keep me safe. Jeanie :)

First, check the fuses in your fuse box to see if the water tank has been tripped. If so, first reset the switch in the fuse box and see if it starts heating.
Many times if a hot water tank stops heating, it is the "heating element". Mine was about $10. The hard part is the tank needs to be drained first. You need a garden hose to drain it. Then screw it out of the tank, and one look will tell you if it's been shorted out. Andy will know how.Only registered and activated users can see links., Click Here To Register..."Given the millions of billions of Earth-like planets, life elsewhere in the Universe without a doubt, does exist."

Oh my, Jeanie! Nobody said you needed to rehearse for Irma to that extent. It's such a shame you had a hot water heater disaster.
Those shop vacs are amazing--I'm glad somebody came along with one.

Shop vacs are great. I have one my dad had, and it still works great. Black & Decker I think. I keep it in the garage for cleaning out the car....back when I used to do such things.

I echo what Agate said! If there is a silver lining (my mother always said there is to everything), then at least your water heater flood occurred before Irma hit.
So is the neighbor who helped with the shop vacuum staying too? I feel better about you staying, if other neighbors are too.
From the news I've been watching it seems that the concern is more about the storm surge than the winds. Of course, no one is downplaying the winds, just emphasizing that flooding is a great possibility.
Are you near the coast? Or further inland?
Gov. Scott said that "All Floridians should be prepared to evacuate." He also listed the assorted assistance being offered/provided to residents to evacuate.

Rose, a more cynical bit of wisdom has it that every silver lining has its cloud...
But I agree that if Jeanie's hot water heater had to get dramatic, it was darned nice of it to do that before Irma got there.
I had the benefit of a shop vac a couple of years ago when my bedroom carpet was flooding because the next-door neighbor, who was a tad forgetful to put it mildly, had left her water running. Even though it was 11 at night, the maintenance tech came over with a shop vac and simply ran it around and sucked up the worst of the water. Probably saved the carpet and certainly eased my mind.SPMS diagnosed 1980. Avonex 2001-2004. Copaxone 2006-2009. Glatopa (glatiramer acetate = Copaxone) 12/20 - 3/19/24.

:) All my neighbors are staying home. I have phone numbers for several of them. One called me today and said if we lose power she has a gas stove and will send me a plate if she cooks a meal.
When her husband barbeques they always send me a plate and he makes wonderful BBQ.
The 5 o'clock report says Irma is moving more west and we are barely in the error cone. We will still get 80 or higher winds. That is good. Sunday afternoon and evening should be our worst time. The power company says they have plenty of people ready to work on restoring power.
Emergency personnel will not go out until the winds are below 35 mph. I have my ceiling fans on and the AC turned down to 74 so no mold comes from the water heater flood. I will add a blanket to the bed. Virginia I think will not get bad winds on this track. I will check in later if I have power. Jeanie :)
