Glad you had a good visit and day, Howie!

Did you ask about the atenolol issue?

Yes. She said they've found that long term use makes your liver swell. What I got instead is a diuretic just like Atenolol, but without the liver issues.

Very good Howie. So glad you had a good day. Now that you have seen your Doctor and like her you are a happy camper, and now that Sam has plenty of turkey she is a happy little cat.

Yes, but I'm still going to make another trip out to the store to get cat litter. She has 2 litter boxes, but both are really low. which I hadn't noticed until I just cleaned them. So cat daddy will get some more.

Atenolol is not a diuretic but a beta blocker. Were you put on HCTZ as a diuretic? If so, in persons over 65, there is a significant increase with that med in blood sugars and transition to type II diabetes or worsening of same. Do you know the names of the three new meds versus what you were on when things got so high? I mean...I don't really HAVE to know but curiosity is getting the better of me here. Having been on this BP roller coaster for so long, I know what has and has not worked well for me and I am more than a little bit curious.

I probably misunderstood her. My 3 new meds are Metoprolol Tartrate, Hydrochlorothiazide, and Amlodipine Besylate. I'm having no problem tolerating any of them, and they have really brought my BP down.

I don't know Peg, she really likes that nurses outfit.

Isn't it strange how our minds work? I was watching TV, and the commercial was for ASPCA, and was playing Silent Night. I got up to pour me another cup of coffee, and I realized I needed to make coleslaw.

Well the whole time I was pouring my coffee, and making my coleslaw, I had Silent Night playing in my head. It still is.

What happened to Sam's ruffled apron that was part of her hostess outfit? She could swap the nurse getup for that one and do the coleslaw and the coffee.

Time to be on your good behavior, Sam. You never know when Santa might be looking in.

She won't wear the hostess outfit any more. She says it makes her work like a dog.

Good morning. Still here. Seeing neuro on Tuesday morning. Hoping for advice on cutting down one more Baclofen daily, to reduce the side effects but not increase spasms.

UTI is resolved. Walked better yesterday than have done in many weeks. Thinking maybe the UTI was smoldering until it finally flared. Now that its gone, maybe thats why walking better.

Metoprolol is similar to Atenolol....a beta blocker...with fewer side effects for many than Atenolol.
HCTZ is Hydrochlorothiazide. It works well with beta blockers to lower BP by getting extra fluid off but it is the drug that I mentioned that needed monitoring (blood glucose checks at least every three months) in persons over 60-65 as it may elevate blood sugars and predispose or worsen type 2 diabetes.
Amlodipine is probably one of the most frequently used and best tolerated of the BP meds.

Current practice recommends three different drugs in different drug categories (as these are) to best manage high BP. Your job will be not only to take them regularly, but to monitor your BP at home and report and elevations or intolerance to the meds. Take BP at different times of day. For example take it when you get up one day and mid day another and before bed on another ...at least once a week. Keep a log you can refer to when you have your check-ups.

Thanks Cherie, I have my BP machine right beside me, and a notebook to write the numbers down.
