Being without power in winter for 9 hours isn't my idea of fun. Somebody went off the road and lit into a utility pole and knocked out power in this part of town for many thousands of people.
I was jolted awake at 5 AM by a loud pop and a flash of light, and then no power. It was cold. I spent most of the morning lying down with blankets over me.
Years ago I made the quilt that is still on my bed. At times like these I'm very glad I did that.
Now I have some gadgets that need resetting but at least the heat and lights are back. And the grocery delivery even got here though the doors to the building couldn't be opened automatically.
Good thing we managed. I was sharing a grocery order with a neighbor who is in her 90s and frail. I really wanted to make sure she got her food because she's too thin.
I've been busy with all of this but hope to catch up on the board soon.
About the backup generator we don't have here, I checked into this issue a while back, in connection with the previous building I was living in, and it looks as if you might see backup generators in hospitals, nursing homes, even assisted living centers, but I haven't heard of them in apartment buildings.
I'm all for an emergency generator but it's just a dream. HUD finds it difficult to come up with funds for anything.
I consider having heat, and cool, for PWMS, a basic necessity. For absolute emergencies where we have lost all power, I can always go out and sit in the car.

I like the little Tootsie Roll minis. Comfort food!
My mom used to work as a barber until she lost sensation in her feet- thanks to MS. She had a glass jar that she kept Tootsie Pops in for the good "kids". Now she keeps the jar filled with Tootsie Roll minis for herself, children, grandkids and any guest who wants one. I just refilled it for her a week ago.

That goes without saying. Her current sewing/craft room is 18X25 and I installed built in shelving all the way around plus a felt covered stick pin board so she can hang projects she is working on. She also has a wall mounted TV with cable box and Apple TV so she never misses a Fon's and Porter's Love of Quilting episode. She also has a large laundry tub hooked to the hot and cold water lines and the septic system for dying fabric.
I know which side my bread is buttered on. I also have to admit there is also a recliner in there so if we want to watch something together I (and the dog) have a place to sit besides the floor.
Can I have some chocolate now? Pleeease?!?
Oh my.. I wish I had a sewing room like this.

Seems like all of you have been busy with each other today.
Howie...sorry you ended up with too much. We love you and need you to be safe.
I envy Trish's sewing room and equipment and supplies. I have (had) them but then vision got wonky and work was no longer joyful or fun so I kind of put it away for years till Becky was to be ordained and I made vestments for her. Truth is, there is a pile of mending sitting upstairs by the sewing machine for over a year that has not gotten done.
We tend not to lose power for long as we are next door to a volunteer fire station and they are a power priority whenever it is compromised so if they are out, we are and if they get it back, we do.
It is down to 22 degrees now. I made the Thanksgiving pies today. Will do bread and cranberry relish tomorrow and prep the veggies and then do the turkey and stuffing Thursday. I can no longer do the whole thing in a marathon prep. Have guests coming from Maine tomorrow for several days . Fellow musician from 40+ years ago with his Dad who has Alzheimer's and their 3 year old adopted pomeranian. When he comes, we have wonderful music making sessions in the evenings and then he sleeps till noon or later while I tend to his dad and dog. David is on tap to help this year as he has seen the pattern and knows our friend needs respite so he will take care of dog and house while I am on tap for the Dad.
Feeling better than I have in a long time. Diverticulitis is gone. UTI is seemingly gone. Went off antibiotics yesterday. Trying not to push the envelope too hard while keeping some normalcy. David is a big help stepping in and lending a hand with housework and errands.
Please...all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. We are down two grandsons as their Dad has them for three days but are still a full table with the extra guests.
I'm looking forward to thanksgiving here in the jolly old nursing home. Supposedly they're offering "Turkey with all the trimmings". If it's like yesterday's meals, I'm grateful for my stash of cheese and crackers, energy bars, and orange juice, what I ate yesterday in lieu of mystery meat smothered in gravy, way-to-sweet potatoes, and way overcooked broccoli for lunch, and a baloney sandwich and chicken broth for dinner....
Tom Cat isn't feeling well, so I told him not to come (45 minute drive). Don't know what he's having for thanksgiving but know it won't be Turkey...

I wish I were right next door to you! I like to cook once in a while and it would be fun to slip in to visit with food presents! These days I make a lot of soups. My newest cookbook is titled "Love Soup". I love reading through cookbooks so this book and I are a perfect match!
Well, no matter what they bring maybe you can trick your mind into thinking it is wonderful!
Here's hoping!

It is snowing so hard that I cant see 50 feet. But it is just warm enough that it isn't sticking.......yet. I have a Dr appt in an hour. Oh goody. And I would cancel but the ywill not be back until next Tuesday and I need several refills of meds.
Peg, Gary, you two just keep ALL that snow for yourselves to play and have fun in, and don't even think of sending it this way. The cats and I will be fine playing ice hockey with some spoons and ice cubes in the freezer.

:) Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We have a new board poster on the bruise thread, Joshremus.
My cough has become very annoying because it is more frequent. Hopefully tomorrow it will not be as bad as today. I am pretty sure I have COPD as I smoked almost 40 years. I quit over 20 years ago but I've now had a cough for about 3 years.
